The Elder Scrolls 2: Daggerfall Has Been Remade in Unity

Thanks to an incredible (i.e. insane) fan effort, The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall has been remade in the Unity engine.

Developer Gavin “Interkarma” Clayton has been working on a Unity version of Daggerfall for years, but he only recently put out a build of the game he felt was worthy of the “Alpha” tag. Thanks to his efforts, it’s now possible to play Daggerfall from beginning to end in the Unity engine. Previously, the only way to play Daggerfall at all on modern machines was to use a DOS emulator service.

The Unity remake also yields some additional benefits. Controls have been revamped to replace the original’s awkward mouse input system with more convenient keyboard options. The upgrade to Unity also means that Daggerfall looks much cleaner than ever and even finally supports widescreens. There’s also a suite of minor (though welcome) improvements in the remake that include UI improvements, tutorial skips, and the ability to perform single click attacks.

Clayton says he intends to continue improving this Unity remake, but it’s certainly more than playable at the moment if you wish to download the Alpha for free right here.

While the Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind is arguably where the Elder Scrolls series really start to hit its stride, the appeal of Daggerfall has always been its absurdly large video game world. While it may feature more than a few repetitious environments, Daggerfall‘s world clocks-in at a record-setting 62,394 square mile game world that reportedly takes you about 60 hours to cross on foot.

While we’ve got high expectations for The Elder Scrolls VI, we somehow don’t feel like it’s going to be able to replicate Daggerfall‘s size.
